Catching Fire

                           Catching Fire

In class we are reading the book Catching Fire many characters defied the capitol and still continue to do so. They defied the capitol in many different ways.

During her private session with the gamemakers, Katniss hung a dummy of former head game maker Seneca Crane. On page 236 it says that she wanted to "break through the smug veneer of those who used their brains to find amusing ways to kill (the tributes). To make (the gamemakers) realize that while (the tributes) are as well." This was a act of defiant because she is sending a message to the gamemakers that they are not safe. She is reminding them that the last head gamemaker was killed by Snow and that they are disposable as well.

Peeta had an interview with Cesar Flickerman and during his interview he told everyone that Katniss was pregnant. On page 256 Peeta talks to Cesar and says "maybe I'd think that too, if it weren't for the baby." This was an act of defiance because the citizens are rioting, wanting the games canceled.

The tributes held hands in unity. On page 258 in the text it says “And then it happens. Up and down the row, the victors begin to join hands.” This is an act of defiance because the tributes are supposed to be against each other and not joining hands and being together.

Cinna turned the wedding dress President Snow designed into a Mocking Jay. On page 252 Cinna says “Don’t worry, I always channel my emotions into my work. That way I don’t hurt anyone but myself.” This is an act defiance because the Mocking Jay reminds President Snow of all of his past and present failure. That is why President Snow killed Cinna right before the Quarter Quell and made her watch. They made her watch so they could get her off track and make her emotions sky rocket.

I feel that President Snow would find Katniss defying the Capitol the most defiant because she is a girl from district 12, and no one would imagine or think of her winning the Hunger Games. Also the Capitol has put her through a lot and she still hasn’t given up. For example a new peacekeeper whipped Gale in front of everyone in the town square for “poaching.”
