Catching Fire

In my language arts class we are reading Catching Fire. We are talking about defiance. Defiance means that your acting out against authority.

During her private session with the game makers, Katniss hung a dummy of former Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane. On page 236 it says that she wanted to "break through the smug veneer of those who use their brains to find amusing ways to kill. To make them realize that while the tributes were valuable to the Capitol's cruelties, the game makers are as well."

During Peeta's interview he told everyone that Katniss was pregnant. On page 256 he said," Maybe I'd think that, too, Ceasar, if it weren'r for the baby." This is an act of defiance because it turns citizens against the games and President Snow.

After all the interviews were over and all the tributes were standing on the stage they all held hands united. On page 258 it said," By the time the anthem plays its final strains, all twenty-four of us stand in one unbroken line in what must be the first public show of unity among the districts since the Dark Days." This was defiant because they are all bringing the districts together.

When Katniss was in her interview Cinna turned her wedding dress that Snow made her wear into a mockingjay. In the book she said," A mockingjay, I think. It’s the bird on the pin I wear as a token." This was an act of defiance because the mockingjay is a symbol of rebellion.

My conclusion is that President Snow thought that when the tributes all held hands he knew that this was the biggest act of defiance because it showed everyone that the tributes were gonna work together against the Capitol.
